The number of Emperor Penguins, an iconic species of Antarctica, are likely to plummet 95% by 2100.
Why this matters: As global warming heats up the planet, species all over the world are at risk. In Antarctica, melting ice plays havoc with the ecosystem; Emperor Penguins depend upon the ice for a safe place for their eggs, and the ice also affects where and how plentiful food is. There are pragmatic considerations for people about global warming (e.g. flooded seaside cities), but beyond that the world is a richer, more interesting place for the animals we share it with.
