Are we close to being able to destroy or inactivate prions in a hospital/medical setting? Jackson et al 2005 Journal of Virology reported success using ionic proteolytic enzymatic detergent prior to sterilization with little instrument degradation. We need a simple, inexpensive techniqe that can be applied to a wide variety of instruments so that it can be done as a standard procedure, rather than just on known CJD patients. Currently the suggestions are to throw out all equipment used on these patients.

There are many ways of arranging this, some more fair than others, and I hope the better angels of our nature steer us in the direction of fairness and justice.
